Getting a person on the moon was a HUGE scientific endeavor; the United States was determined to be the first people to get to the moon. But at what cost; Neil Armstrong got to be the first “man” on the moon, while there are people in the United States STARVING to death. In the spoken word poem Whitey on the Moon by Gil Scott-Heron he states that there’s no hot water, no toilets, BUT there’s a white man on the moon. This poem is presents a different view that most scientist forget to take into account. Taxes take money from everyone in the United States and the government distributes that as needed; but the government seems to forget about those who are losing all of their money to taxes, or those who can’t pay hospital bills. There are people who have nothing, and yet the biggest concern for the scientists during the space race was winning by getting a man to the moon.
